Why you never shoot into the sun

I rand down this morning to get a picture of the greenhouse for my blog. This was the best angle and it was right into the sunrise, but if you squint you can see my progress so far.

This is all I got done last Saturday, but I spent a lot of time that day pulling nails out of boards that I could use in framing. Almost half of the greenhouse will be built out of reclaimed lumber. I’ve had a number of 2x6s lying around since since two houses ago, and I figured it was a good way to both clean up the lumber and save some money. You can tell it’s reclaimed by looking at the two corner pieces, which look plaid. They were originally part of somebody’s trellis, which was painted white and the white paint came through onto the frame. When the trellis was pulled apart I got the frame pieces. But the plaid will not be as noticeable once it’s all put together.

I had to dig a trench in the ground to help the whole thing stay level. It hasn’t worked very well, and I’ll still have to shore up the low corners with some cinderblocks we still have in the crawlspace. But that’ll be fine; I’m not building for the ages.

Today I was in Home Depot and stopped by the cull bin looking for a section of treated 4×4 so I can finish my front deck railing. No such luck, but I did fiind enough 1x4s and 2x4s to frame all the shelving in the greenhouse. (Plus a precut stringer for the front steps–for a dollar! New is better than $25.) Total for all shelving frames: $21.92. Let’s hear it for cheap!

Next step is to finish framing the side closest to you. Then I’ll tack a support brace onto the king post, and with Jess’ help raise the center beam. It’s a used 4×6 I’ve had laying around. Then I can cut and hang the rafters, add the crosspieces, add a 1×6 at the bottom, and slide the glass panels into place.

All the walls will be visqueen for now. That will only last a few years, but it’ll do until I find more glass.

I’ll send you a picture.
